WHO I AM

/About Me

First-year games development student at York St John University. I make games, build 3D models, and am looking for an internship.

Toby Hall

/Introduction

I got into games development because I enjoyed taking games apart in my head, figuring out why certain spaces feel tense, or how a game gets you to care about something without directly telling you to. That side of it still interests me the most: the design decisions behind how an experience actually feels.

I'm in my first year at York St John University studying BSc Computer Science with Game Development. Before that I did a Level 3 Games Development course at York College, where I got two distinctions. I'm looking for an internship where I can get some real experience and learn how a studio actually works.

/My Story

After my GCSEs I had no real plan. I went to a college open day, ended up in a 3D modelling workshop, and found it genuinely interesting. My tutor Steve was a big part of that. He gave me a realistic picture of what games development actually involves, which made me want to pursue it properly.

I finished with two distinctions and moved on to university. That's pretty much it. No grand narrative, just found something I was good at and enjoyed, and kept going.

/Skills & Strengths

Blender: modelling, rigging, environment art
Substance Painter: PBR texturing and materials
KeyShot: rendering and visualisation
Gaussian splatting and photogrammetry
Python and Pygame
C++ (in progress via coursework)
Git and GitHub: version control workflows
HTML and CSS: web development
3D printing and physical prototyping

PERSONAL STRENGTHS

Quick learner who picks up new tools independently
Collaborative, with a strong team attitude from university group projects
Clear communicator, comfortable explaining technical ideas
Creative problem solver who enjoys iterative design
Resilient and adaptable, takes feedback well and acts on it
Gets stuck in with code, software, or hardware, whatever's needed

/What I'm Looking For

I'm looking for an internship where I can see how a real studio operates, the actual day to day of production, how teams communicate, and how projects get from an idea to something finished. I want to pick things up fast and be useful, not just sit and watch.

In past projects I've been reliable, easy to work with, and happy to take on whatever needs doing, whether that's code, 3D work, or something more practical. I pick things up quickly and don't need a lot of hand-holding.

ROLES I'M INTERESTED IN

  • Environment Art or Technical Artist internship
  • Level Design or Game Design placement
  • 3D Modelling or Asset Production role
  • Any games studio internship where I can learn and contribute
